How our web access works

Access PIMS modules on line

All our databases are accessible using the internet.

This means that you use Internet Explorer (or other browser) to connect to a web site which looks and behaves exactly like your database at work.

It also means that no work has to be done to computers in order to make data and applications available to them except connecting them to your intranet, or the internet.

For the user

Users, you will need internet or VPN access to your intranet.

It need not be fast - the applications work fine at dial-up speeds.

You will be given a web address - perhaps you will keep this in your list of favourites,
or have a shortcut on their desktop which opens this web page.

You log in - using your personal username and password. This is necessary to prevent unauthorised access.

You then see a screen showing what applications you can access. Click on one to use it.

The applications behave very like the ordinary BSL (client-server) applications you might be used to.

Technically

We supply a web server which you integrate with your network. How to integrate it with your network

Alternatively, you supply us with a PC which can be used as a web server, and we install our web application server and web application.

This manages the application level user authentication, and provides access to the dynamic and static pages which make up the web application. We manage and maintain the web server remotely.

Hardware problems are resolved locally - by your hardware support. Although there is no live data on the web server, you should back it up for security on a nightly basis.

We will supply an installation CD which will turn a suitable PC into our web server - so that you can keep as many of these servers running as you wish, to satisfy load bearing or availability needs. We do not restrict you to one or two!

Schematically

Our web servers sit inside your network, within the firewall.

Access to them is controlled by your usual security.

Additionally, we shall implement per-user passwords to manage application authentication. Optionally this can be handled by your network authentication procedures.

Users connect to the various BSL or other databases on your site through the BSL Web applications.
