Details of the solutions provided by Bright Systems

Overview How it works

We utilise industry standard RDBMS systems to server clients operating under client-server or web browser based interfaces. The Web interface requires a web application server we can supply within the costs of the project.

All feature the following:

  • Open systems architecture for extension and integration
  • Toolkits for their modification, extension and development
  • System and User management tools
  • Integrated graphics, GIS reporting and export to Intranet or Worldwide Web
  • Integrated email facilities (via SMTP or MAPI)
  • Easy to use electronic data upload from almost any source
Working with your infrastructure

We try hard to integrate with your infrastructure. We do this to the degree that best suits you. If you need us to we can:-

  • use your existing servers
  • use your WAN or LAN networks to provide a distributed service
  • provide application solutions which split along your organisational lines
  • provide an easy to use access control application SUMA
  • integrate with your Office suite - e.g. Word, Excel, Outlook, Notes or Groupwise

Working with your data

We try to integrate with your existing data. Bright Systems can link to your core pupil data in various ways, depending on the way in which you would like us to. We can:-

  • use the core pupil data directly
  • use the core pupil data indirectly - via snapshot exports
  • provide managed or automated two-way data transfer
  • integrate 100% with your existing central pupil database

The client solutions

Our applications are configured in a way that allows a pick and mix approach. The systems can be accessed over TCP/IP networks, such as your intranet, or even the internet using secure VPN.

  • Client - Server solutions from terminals on your LAN or WAN
  • Web browser solutions from anywhere

Users can mix the solutions - sometimes accessing using the Client Server method - and then remotely using the web browser solution. The applications look much the same whichever methond is used - but there are some differences.

Server RDBMS Solutions

Our client will run with the following RDBMS setups:-

  • Oracle 8.0.5 or later on any platform
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 or later
  • MySQL Server 4 or later on Linux, Windows or Sparc

Server PC Requirements

We will use your standard server specification, as this is usually more than sufficient for our needs. However, on shared server environments the following will allow you to assess whether the server in question has sufficient free processing power:

  • 20 MHz per connected user
  • 4 MB RAM per connected user plus 40 MB
  • 10 MBit/s Ethernet or such supporting TCP/IP

Client PC Requirements

For Client Server PCs we require the use of a 32 bit OS. We can tolerate Windows 98, but Windows 2000 or XP is preferred.

RAM requirements are best calculated in association with your standard usage patterns, but our application requires about 8MB to run.

Minimum processor requirements are a 300MHz Pentium or AMD or equivalent.

For web based PCs we can use Windows 98 or Apple Macs (IE4 or later).

The Powerhouse

Our flagship technology is the BSL Workflow Engine which is used by our office automation products. This technology features as the heart of our SEN Code of Practice Management System, the Educational Psychology Manager, the Exclusions Manager and Planning Process Manager.

Our Pupil Information Management System supports these and other modular database systems for managing all aspects of LEA child management. It features cutting edge developments for duplication avoidance, data sourcing from less reliable data (schools systems) and many other automation tools.
